Meet Harris

I am running for the California State Senate to protect and strengthen public education, to stand with immigrant and refugee communities, and to fight for a more affordable and equitable California.

Meet Harris

Harris Mojadedi was born in Fremont to Afghan refugee parents who came to the United States seeking safety, dignity, and opportunity. Like many families rebuilding their lives, grew up relying on Alameda County’s social safety-net programs, including Section 8 housing, food assistance, and public health services. Those early experiences shaped his lifelong commitment to public service and to ensuring that government works for the people who need it most. He grew up in a union household with both of his sisters working as In Home Support Services caregivers.

A proud graduate of James Logan High School, Harris attended public schools in Fremont and Union City before earning his bachelor’s degree in Political Science from San José State University and completing graduate work at Saint Mary’s College of California. His path into public service began locally, working for the City of Fremont’s Parks and Recreation Department, an early lesson in how local government can strengthen community and expand opportunity.

Harris has built a career dedicated to education, equity, and civic engagement. He has served in leadership roles at CSU East Bay and currently serves as an Assistant Dean at UC Berkeley, where he works on initiatives that support student success, access, and wellbeing across one of the nation’s leading public universities.

In addition to his work in higher education, Harris is an elected Trustee for the Chabot–Las Positas Community College District, representing Union City and South Hayward. As a trustee, he has championed student success, workforce pathways, and equitable access to higher education, all while helping guide the district through COVID recovery and enrollment stabilization.

Harris has also been deeply involved in civic leadership and human-rights advocacy. He has served as a Planning Commissioner and Human Relations Commissioner, sits on the Board of the San Francisco Bay Area Steering Committee of the Human Rights Campaign, and has been an active volunteer and leader in Afghan refugee resettlement efforts across the East Bay. In response to rising hate and division, Harris helped organize the Union City Stands United Against Hate rallies, bringing together community members, faith leaders, and elected officials in solidarity.

Rooted in the East Bay and shaped by the values of resilience, inclusion, and public service, Harris Mojadedi’s life story reflects the promise of public education, strong community institutions, and a government that invests in people. His work across education, local government, and community advocacy continues to be driven by a simple belief: everyone deserves a fair shot and a voice in shaping our collective future.

Priorities

I’m stepping up to run for State Senate because our values are worth defending and because this moment demands nothing less.

AFFORDABILITY

Families are being squeezed by rising prices and reduced federal benefits like the Affordable Care Act healthcare insurance premium subsidy and childcare assistance. I will fight to ensure California enacts policies that prioritize everyday families, not the rich and powerful.

To drive down housing costs, we need to build more housing, at all levels of affordability, faster. And, we have to recognize California families are facing a home insurance crisis, and act with urgency to make sure policies properly cover losses and premiums remain affordable.

Our community thrives when our neighbors thrive. My priorities include broadening worker protections and expanding opportunity for small businesses, the economic engine of our community, employing thousands of our neighbors.

EDUCATION

As an Assistant Dean at UC Berkeley, I work on issues such as affordability, student mental health and wellness, career readiness, and leadership development. As a Community College Trustee, I work to safeguard critical student services at a time when public education is under direct attack from the Trump Administration. Championing policies that support student success and belonging are at the heart of my work.

In the State Senate, I will promote early literacy and early learning and build seamless pathways from preschool through high school and into a trade school, college or career, so that every student is equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

PUBLIC SAFETY

We must keep communities safe while protecting our most vulnerable – by investing in prevention, care, and trust, not fear and punishment. This means fully funding fire services, emergency response, and disaster preparedness, and expanding mental health and substance-use treatment so people in crisis receive care that stabilizes lives and prevents repeat harm instead of incarceration.

Public safety is undermined when immigrant and refugee communities are terrorized by ICE, driving people in the shadows and discouraging cooperation with first responders, which is why California must continue to keep ICE out of our communities.

I support common-sense gun violence prevention policies that keep guns out of the hands of criminals and those who pose a danger to themselves or others.

PROTECTING OUR NEIGHBORS

Right now, we are witnessing federal actions – particularly the use of ICE – that are terrorizing immigrant and refugee communities across California and our country. This moment calls for bravery from every one of us and in the legislature, I will work to ensure that the State of California uses every tool at our disposal to fight back against a repressive federal government and will fight to keep ICE out of our communities.
